Christ is the Cornerstone of the Church

God has declared Christ the living cornerstone of a spiritual house made up of those redeemed by him, built upon the truth of the Gospel, and sustained by the power of his Holy Spirit. Those who trust Christ as Savior are this building, the church.

In the book of 1 Peter, chapter 2, the Apostle Peter declares Jesus Christ the cornerstone and calls believers 'living stones'. He quotes Isaiah 28:16, "See, I lay a stone in Zion, a chosen and precious cornerstone, and the one who trusts in him will never be put to shame." This is a remarkably accurate rendition of the Gospel message, written in prophecy hundreds of years before Christ and fulfilled by him.

But, not everyone is willing to trust Christ as their Lord and Savior. Peter, quoting Isaiah 8:14, says that, to those who do not believe, Christ is "A stone that causes men to stumble and a rock that makes them fall" (1 Peter 2:7). Peter goes on to say that they stumble because of their unbelief (1 Peter 2:8). The Apostle Paul also writes that "some live as enemies of the cross of Christ" (Philippians 3:18). There have always been those who oppose the truth of God and his people. However, because the church has Christ as its cornerstone, no attack upon it will ultimately succeed. Indeed, Jesus himself told his disciples, "I will build my church, and the gates of hell will not prevail against it." (Matthew 16:18)

In contrast to those who reject Christ, Peter describes the position of believers. "But you are a chosen people, a royal priesthood, a holy nation, a people belonging to God..." (1 Peter 2:9a) Through Christ's sacrifice on the cross believers are saved from hell, promised heaven, and belong to him. God receives glory in Christ through the testimony of believers. Peter describes this as our purpose: "...that you may declare the praises of him who called you out of darkness into his wonderful light." (1 Peter 2:9b)

Since we belong to Jesus Christ, Peter challenges every believer to abstain from evil desires and live such good lives that people will glorify God. (1 Peter 2:11-12) What a blessed thing it is to be a child of God. How can we not obey him, praise him, and worship him?    Pastor Dan Rhodes
