Culturally Conformed, or Spiritually Transformed?

As followers of Christ it is God's plan for us to live outwardly what He has accomplished in us inwardly. When we trust in Jesus Christ for our salvation the Holy Spirit creates a new heart in us. Its God's will for every Christian to be conformed to the character of Christ (Romans 8:29). In contrast to this, the culture around us often tempts us to resist this spiritual process. If we are not careful, we can easily begin to adopt the cultural values of the world.  Even devout Christians can be tempted to go beyond what the Scriptures say.

For instance, the Scriptures promote the dignity and equality of the role of women in society. But, not long ago, women were relegated to second class citizenship in America, and not allowed to vote. Nowhere in Scripture can such a policy be justified. Yet, even in our Judeo-Christian culture, it was considered acceptable for a time.

When popular culture considered divorce unacceptable, most Christians saw a divorced person as having a permanent mark of failure which disqualified them from the work of the church. This was a position which went beyond anything the Bible teaches. Some Christians have again followed cultural influences and now dismiss divorce as spiritually irrelevant. Thus, like a pendulum, they have swung too far from Scriptural truth the other way.

Our current law and culture allows abortion on demand, a policy which violates the Scriptural position of the sanctity of life. Unfortunately, many Christians have accepted the normalization of abortion, if only as a necessary evil.

We must each resist the temptation to go along with worldly influences. With the help of the Holy Spirit we can instead become more like Christ every day. This means replacing the values of the culture around us with the values of Christ. In Romans 12:2, it says, "Do not conform any longer to the pattern of this world, but be transformed by the renewing of your mind."

This transformation has already been accomplished by God in the heart of every believer. 1 Corinthians 5:17 puts it this way, "If anyone is in Christ, he is a new creation." But, what God has done in the heart needs to be reflected in the mind. To be transformed in our minds we must reject the ungodly values of the world, and make a conscious decision to cooperate with the Holy Spirit.                             Pastor Daniel Rhodes
