10-27-2015 God's Invitation To Life

While getting a haircut, a minister engaged the barber in a discussion about God. "If God is so loving," the barber asked, "how can he allow all the poverty, addiction, and crime we have in this city?"

Just then, a man with shaggy hair and several days of stubble on his face stopped in front of the barbershop window. The minister pointed out the man to the barber, and said, "You must not be a very good barber to allow someone so unkempt to walk around our city."

"Don't blame me!", the barber exclaimed. "He's never come in here, or I would have fixed him up with a great haircut."

"So don't blame God for those people who continue in their evil ways," the minster replied. "He invites everyone to come to him and be saved from their sins."

Like the barber in this story, many people seem to think God should be blamed for everything bad that happens. But, of course, he is rarely given credit for any of the good things. Satan has deceived people into believing that if God cared about mankind, he wouldn't allow any hardship. There would be no crime, no addiction, no suffering. But, what is being overlooked is our personal accountability.

Humans are morally autonomous, and we choose our behavior. Our lives are shaped by every choice we make. Most of what we experience, both good and bad, is a direct result of our own decisions. In fact, as Americans, we pride ourselves that we have a society where personal freedom is highly valued. So, we cannot blame God, or anyone else, when we cause our own problems.

The good news is that God does love mankind, and actively works in the lives of all who come to him. Jesus said, "Come to me, all you who are weary and burdened, and I will give you rest. Take my yoke upon you and learn from me, for I am gentle and humble in heart, and you will find rest for your souls. For my yoke is easy and my burden is light." (Matthew 11:28-30) The weight of our sin is infinitely heavy. If we try to carry it ourselves it will crush us. But, Jesus Christ carried the burden of our sin to the cross for us. When we come to him in faith, our sins are forgiven, and we have rest for our souls.   Pastor Daniel Rhodes
