Leaving a Spiritual Heritage

Once, while visiting the church in which I was raised, the pastor invited me to give my testimony. I shared my salvation experience, and with great emotion, I told the congregation that they were a part of my spiritual heritage. I was privileged to have been brought up in a home, and at a church, where the Word of God and the name of Jesus were exalted.

The pastor then decided to change the topic of his sermon, and spoke eloquently about leaving a spiritual heritage to the next generation. He mentioned Proverbs 22:1, "A good name is more desirable than great riches; to be esteemed is better than silver or gold."

Most people want to leave something to their children. Many people are able to leave a sizable financial inheritance. But, how many are leaving a good spiritual heritage? Money is fine for this life, but a spiritual heritage of faith in Christ has eternal value.

Everyone leaves a heritage of some kind. For good or ill, how you live has an impact on the next generation. Although each person must have faith in Christ personally to receive eternal life, if you have communicated your love for God and your trust in Jesus Christ, the value of your spiritual heritage will be priceless. This eternal perspective on life is described in Ecclesiastes 7:1, "A good name is better than fine perfume, and the day of death better than the day of birth." As Christians, the day we go on to our reward in Heaven is the best day of our lives. But, it is also the last day to make a difference in the heritage we leave behind. We must do everything we can now to pass on the truth of the Gospel to our posterity.

How will future generations evaluate the heritage you have built? Will you be leaving a priceless spiritual heritage, or merely a financial one? If you have any doubt, it is never too late to make a difference, as long as you live. Solomon put it this way, in Proverbs 3:3-4, "Let love and faithfulness never leave you; bind them around your neck, write them on the tablet of your heart. Then you will win favor and a good name in the sight of God and man."                                  Pastor Daniel Rhodes
