11-17-15 SET YOUR HEART ON THINGS OF GOD

The power to live a successful Christian life is found in God. But, the determination to do so is a human perogative. We must each choose to obey God. As children of God we are empowered to live like Christ, but God does not force us to do so.

Our faith in God should affect every aspect of our lives. God has given us his Holy Word as our guide for godly living. As we exercise our faith in God, his Word provides the specifics of how we can live to please him.

In the Bible there are many examples of people who determined in their hearts to obey God. An example is the writer of Psalm 119:112, who declared, "My heart is set on keeping your decrees to the very end." This is a perfect description of following God's ways.

"My heart is set..." There is a decision process involved in our obedience to God. It starts in our hearts. Colossians 3:1 says the same thing, "Set your hearts on things above". If you have your heart set on something, it means you want it more than anything else. The heart of a true believer chooses to obey God.

"...on keeping your decrees..." 2 Peter 1:3 tells us we have "everything we need for a godly life through our knowledge of him who called us." God's Word reveals his power, his purpose, and his plan for eternal salvation. All of his decrees are ultimately for our good. By knowing and obeying God's Word, we demonstrate our love for him.

"...to the very end." This implies several things. First, true faith in God is not temporary, it is a permanent condition of life. Second, our relationship with God does not depend on our circumstances. Faith transcends everything of this world. Third, because God is faithful, we can be faithful to him through his power and provision. Finally, any kind of faith that is not "to the very end" is actually not faith at all.

God has put eternity in our hearts (Ecclesiastes 3:11). We know intuitively that what we see is not all there is. The only question is: what will we do with this knowledge? We know the Psalmist's decision; "My heart is set on keeping your decrees to the very end."
