Spiritual Growth Comes From The Word of God

To progress spiritually as Christians, we must develop and grow. This is how all life works. Physical growth requires care, energy, and nutrition. Plant life requires the right nutrients and environment. In a similar way we need spiritual sustenance to grow spiritually.

The Apostle Peter commands that we should, "Like newborn babies, crave pure spiritual milk, so that by it you may grow up in your salvation, now that you have tasted that the Lord is good." (1 Peter 2:2-3) We need spiritual nutrition or we will fail to thrive in our Christian life. Even though we may have been saved a long time, without spiritual food from God's Word we will never grow up.

Peter reminds us that we have "tasted that the Lord is good". Remember how wonderful it was when you first came to know Christ? The joy of knowing God has forgiven you; the gratitude toward Christ for paying the penalty for your sin; the child-like faith and love that overwhelmed your heart. With this as our motivation, we are to crave the pure milk of the Word.

But, Peter is not telling us that we are all spiritual babies. He is saying that we should crave the Word of God the way a baby craves milk. Babies crave milk intensely, and will not stop crying until their hunger is satisfied. We should crave the things of God with that same kind of intensity.

Many Christians today are failing to thrive spiritually because they have lost the desire for the things of God they had when they were first saved. The reason for this is often unconfessed sin. 1 Peter 2:1: "Therefore, rid yourself of all malice, and all deceit, hypocrisy, envy, and slander of every kind."

Harboring sin in our hearts inhibits our desire for God's Word. The sins he mentions here are all relational, resulting from a lack of love. When we become hardened to sin, we lose the desire for the things of God, and we stop loving others. When we rid ourselves of sin by repentance, we will desire the spiritual milk of God's Word once more.

If you find yourself hardened toward others, with no desire for spiritual things, you can regain the loving tenderness of heart that you once enjoyed. Just ask God to forgive your sin and rekindle your craving for the spiritual milk of the Word.                               Pastor Dan Rhodes
