The True Meaning of Christmas

The celebration of Christmas is a joyful and heart-warming time of year. But, to understand the true meaning of Christmas we need to get the proper perspective. There are only thirty-nine verses dedicated to the Nativity, and that's only if you include the visit of the Magi. By comparison there are over seven hundred verses related to Christ's death.

While all the Gospels, and many other New Testament books, contain passages concerning Jesus' death, only two include any facts related to his birth. The two that do, Matthew and Luke, give only a brief account. The obvious conclusion is that its more important to God that we learn the reason Christ came, his atoning death, than just the plain facts of his arrival.

In fact, the reason Christ came to earth is the main topic of the Bible. It is all about God's provision to restore mankind from the fall into sin. The story begins with God providing animal skins to cover Adam and Eve's nakedness after they disobeyed him. Blood had to be spilled to cover their sin. At the time God promised that through the seed of the woman Eve, the head of the serpent would be crushed (Genesis 3:15). This is the first reference to the One who would come to earth to defeat Satan.

Throughout the rest of Scripture God gradually reveals more detail concerning how this would be accomplished. Ultimately, God himself came in the form of Jesus Christ, born as the 'seed' of the woman, without an earthly father. God entered the human race as the second Person of the Trinity, Jesus the Son. He became human in order to restore fellowship with mankind that had been destroyed by sin. Only a perfect sacrifice could, once and for all, break down the wall between mankind and God. Jesus came to earth and became that perfect sacrifice, shedding his blood in death as the payment for all the sins of every person; past, present, and future.

The birth of the Christ-child represents this sacrifice. Because he loves us, Jesus gave up the majesty of heaven. He came to earth so that he could die for our sins. The true meaning of Christmas is that God gave mankind the greatest gift ever given: eternal life through our Lord and Savior Jesus Christ.    Pastor Daniel Rhodes
