 New King James

 NIV

Freedoms Foundation
What I say to you, I say not only as a Pastor of the Lord’s church, but also as a patriot, a veteran of the Vietnam war, and as a shepherd for 27 years to a church that ministered to many, many military personnel and their families during that time.

Never before in the history of the world has there been a military force as professional or as powerful as that of the United States of America today. American military power is simply unrivaled. We spend more on our military than the next 20 nations combined. We honor and respect our men and women in uniform, and today, the U.S. military is the most trusted institution in our nation.

And yet, I fear that the American people have placed a burden on our military that it can not bear, a mission it cannot accomplish, an expectation it cannot keep; that is, to insure that America remains a free nation.

The genius of the Founders was that they recognized the right to be free did not come from the proclamations of kings or parliaments or from the barrel of a gun, but from the great God who made us. Thomas Jefferson wrote:

‘God who gave us life gave us liberty, and can

the liberties of a nation be thought secure when

we have removed their only firm basis, a conviction

in the minds of the PEOPLE, that these liberties are

the gift of God, that they are not to be violated but

with His wrath? Indeed, I tremble for my country

when I reflect that God is just.’

The Founders declared these truths to be self-evident, but I’m not sure they’re self-evident today.

--- Atheism is on the rise in America and do-it-yourself

spirituality is epidemic

--- The very name of God, written or spoken, is being

erased, expunged, and expelled from the public

square.

--- Ancient boundaries of right and wrong are being

re-defined.

The Founders were of the firm conviction that it was the invisible hand of Almighty God which gave rise to our nation; who gifted her with life and liberty, and this liberty has been preserved for 236 years by the blood and sacrifice of patriots, as it is to this day.

But, if America turns its back on the One who gave her both life and liberty, no military power on Earth will be able to stay His hand of judgment. As God warned Israel against the sin of idolatry, so He warns us today:

‘Just as it pleased the Lord to make you prosper and

increase in number, so it will please Him to ruin and

destroy you.’ Deut.28:63

My prayer for our military is a prayer for our nation; that our great military will rest upon the foundation of a great people, who hold to a great faith, in a great God.

Three thousand years ago, David was the king of Israel and also its Commander in Chief. May what he said then, be said of the United States of America today;

‘Some trust in chariots and some in horses,

But we trust in the Name of the Lord our God.’Psm. 20:7
